# Introduction

Each data channel in Clarity is associated with a **Tag**. Tags may be grouped into a tree like files and folders on a computer; **Site**s and **Devices** typically have root tags under which the tags for device channels are located.

Each tag has associated metadata; for data tags this includes the data type and other settings like the data range and display precision. You may also assign [Alarms](/clarity/alarms/introduction.md) to data tags.
